Indonesia Cities Wellbeing 2022

The idea of city Wellbeing has developed due to the rising understanding that traditional urban development measures, such as GDP and infrastructure, do not adequately capture the holistic needs and desires of people living in cities (Ura Karma, 2015). In recent years, there has been a shift towards a more comprehensive concept where people and Wellbeing are being the forefront of shaping cities). It leads to the necessity of creating a decent and healthy city for all, which is not separated from the urge to shift to a more Wellbeing city. Therefore, the Wellbeing city concept can strive to create environments that enable individuals to lead fulfilling lives and promote holistic Wellbeing.

Measuring City Wellbeing commonly conducted globally by some institutions, for example the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the UK Government, the New York City Government, Knight Frank and Currys Tech Talk. According to our study the basic principles of Indonesian Cities’ Wellbeing include 5 Aspects and 17 Indicators. The five aspects are: Healthy lifestyle and sports, Environmental Quality, Employment and entrepreneurship, City vibrancy, and Social connection. Wellbeing can be measured through primary surveys based on residents’ perceptions. Primary surveys are employed for data collection to assess Wellbeing in Indonesian cities. The survey was conducted in 52 cities across 32 provinces in Indonesia, selected in a representative manner to encompass the country’s geographical, demographic, and social diversity. Upon analyzing the Well-being scores of cities in Indonesia, it has been observed that the average score across all cities is 68. This suggests a relatively moderate level of overall well-being. It can then be adopted and integrated into standards, norms and procedures in planning processes in Indonesia. Imbedding wellbeing as a measure in standards, norms and procedure is expected to systematically eliminate vested interests, political clout and subjectivity.
